Landlocked #Ethiopiasits on the peninsula in the easternmost part of Africa known as Horn of Africa. Ethiopia borders Somalia on its east, Djibouti and Eritrea to its north, Sudan and South Sudan to its West and Kenya to its south. Often people in the US picture Ethiopia as a dry, arid desert but, in fact, the land of Ethiopia is diverse, with wide variations in climate, flora and fauna. There are deserts along the east, mountains in the center and tropical forests in the south. Just as the land is diverse, so are the people — there are over 80 ethnic groups that call Ethiopia home. Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa and most Ethiopians live in rural communities. Ethiopia is organized into a federation of nine ethnically-based, politically autonomous regional states (kililoch, singular kilil) and two chartered cities (astedader akababiwoch, singular astedader akababi). Lake Tana in the north of the country, is the source of the Blue Nile, one of the main tributaries of the famed #Nile river.
