Hi Friends!

Sorry we left you for so long!  Sup! is back and Sammy and I are looking forward to a fun summer Snacking Around the World!  We started the summer going to Caspian Market. They have food from many countries like Turkey and India, but we went to find Persian snacks from Iran.  Before 1935, Iran was commonly called Persia,  so food from Iran is often referred to as Persian cuisine (the main language of Iran is also Persian).

Picking out Persian candy

The owners of Caspian Market were very welcoming!  They helped us pick snacks that kids in Iran love to eat.   The first snack we picked out was Mixed Fruit Paste and Plum Lavashak.  Sammy and I agreed that they both taste like a fruit leather snack. We also tried chickpea flour, and rice flour cookies. They are not very sweet, but I liked the rice flour cookies the best!  They both have poppy seeds in them.

Another snack I liked was what looked like a mini sesame granola bar.  It has a very strong sesame taste.  My favorite snacks, though, were the coconut cookies.  They are sweet and have coconut on the inside. Yum!

The most interesting Persian treat we had was a yogurt soda called Doogh. I have never heard of yogurt soda, but apparently it has been popular in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries since ancient times.  It is essentially soda water and yogurt.  I think it is an acquired taste!  🙂  To me it tasted kind of like sour milk, or buttermilk.

We had so much fun going to Caspian Market and trying Persian snacks!  I know we will make another trip to this market soon.  Don’t forget to follow our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts and subscribe to our Youtube channel to stay up to date with our cultural food adventures!  Watch us trying all of the Persian snacks in the video below.

Dig in!
