Hey Super Sup’ers!

Sammy here…and I am going to countdown my three favorite snack recipes from Snacking Around the World 2017. It was tough picking only three, but here they are!

#3 Hawaii, where the beaches are sunny and the Spam is yummy! Yep, number 3 on my list is Spam Musubi! I love sushi, and this is the most popular sushi dish in Hawaii. Spam Musubi is marinated and cooked spam that is placed on top of rice and wrapped in a band of nori (seaweed). Another reason this snack is on my list is because the history of this recipe is very interesting. Spam is a canned meat that was first introduced in 1937 and gained popularity in Hawaii after millions of cans were shipped to U.S. Soldiers stationed there during World War II. Spam became so popular in Hawaii that it is sometimes referred to as “The Hawaiian Steak”.

On a side note, in the first season of Sup! Kids Cooking we made Ahi Poke which is also a Hawaiian dish (click here to watch). Ahi Poke was actually the FIRST show EVER! We met the nicest Hawaiian chef, Chef Robert. He taught us so many different things about Hawaii and told us what it was like growing up there.

#2 Tanzania, where they farm a lot and eat Chips Mayai on the spot! Chips Mayai is a staple in Tanzanian junk food. It is basically scrambled eggs with fried potatoes and most commonly served with spicy ketchup. Chips Mayai is served in almost every Tanzanian restaurant and is sometimes called zege. We don’t have a specific Tanzanian show but we do have another African show coming soon. Make sure to watch our Burkina Faso episode when it comes out this Spring. HINT/SPOILERS: we made Saghbo with the amazing Chef Mina.

#1 Japan, where the Ice Cream Mochi is round and the traditional way to make it is to pound! Get it??! Mochi has been around for centuries and traditionally a mallet is used to pound the rice flour paste. Ice cream mochi is so good that it is my all-time favorite snack that we made in 2017! I am fascinated by the food and the culture of Japan. In fact, one of my favorite things to do is watch the National Sport of Japan, Sumo wrestling…but that is another show. 🙂 Back to Ice Cream Mochi, which is mochi stuffed with ice cream and formed into a ball. In Japan, they mostly just eat the mochi by itself, but ice cream mochi is the most popular way it is eaten in the United States. There are many different flavors of mochi, and if you watch our show you will see that we made red bean (which is surprisingly sweet), mint, mango and vanilla.
