Hi Super Sup’ers!

I have been wanting to write this post for a while, so now it is a definite throwback! In fact…a throwback to last Summer! Sara and I took a really fun trip to Washington D.C. to learn about food from all over the world. There was a festival in the National Mall called the Around the World Cultural Food Festival!

We took a train ride into D.C. from Baltimore then walked about 2 miles to get to the festival!  It was a beautiful day and

Train to DC!

there is so much to see, so it was a fun start to the day.  When we arrived at the festival we saw tents labeled with different countries like Japan, Mexico, Italy, China, Finland and many more. We smelled delicious food and heard the sounds of food searing and frying. I started to get really excited!

I had a hard time choosing what to eat first because there were so many delicious options! I decided to go to the Japanese tent. If you know me at all…you are probably not surprised. I decided on

Chicken Yakatori…YUM!!

Chicken Yakatori and when I sunk my teeth into it, it tasted like heaven on a stick (everything is good on a stick…hahaha). Sara ate doughnuts from the Ivory Coast. Luckily she let me try one. It tasted like no other doughnut I have had before! It was a pretty hot day, so we also had Italian Gelato to cool off! I had lemon flavor and Sara had chocolate.

The Festival didn’t just have food, they had lots of music, dancing and other demonstrations to teach us about different cultures. We listened to Peruvian music, watched traditional dances from Egypt and even got to play games from Finland. One of the games we played is called Molkky, (Sara beat me twice!!). In Molkky you have to throw a block at wooden pins that have numbers on them and whoever gets the highest number (after adding the numbers on the pins together) wins the game. Then we saw people modeling traditional Spanish dresses as they read a description of how they were made and where they came from.

All of this was fun, but my favorite part of the day were the cooking demonstrations! We met Chef Pong,

Chef Pong and his Assistant

from Thailand, who is one of hosts on Top Chef Thailand! He was so nice and fun to watch. Chef Pong and his assistant made Kang-Liang.  It was so cool to see them make shrimp paste using a pestle and mortar! Then we also watched Chef Maria Bajean from Romania make

Chef Maria Bajean

Cabbage Rolls with polenta. She was so good at it, you could tell she has probably made this dish her whole life!

We are definitely planning a return trip to the Around the World Cultural Food Festival next summer!

Dig in!

Sammy
