Persimmon cakes are also a popular street food in the city of Xian and eating them can help relieve thirst and strengthen the spleen. Legend has it among locals that persimmon cakes were invented towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During this time, there was a shortage of food in Xian which lead to a peasant uprising. The rebels planned to storm Beijing, the capital of the Ming Dynasty, and overthrow their leaders. Persimmon cakes were given to the soldiers for strength and courage. What happened next?? The rebels seized Beijing easily and a new regime of peasants was established! Thank you persimmon cakes!
