I had so much fun in 2017 with Sup!’s Snacking Around the World live segment. Last Spring we started visiting stores around Baltimore that sell food from all over the world! Every week we would buy snacks from different stores and then try the snacks on a live video. This Fall we decided to mix things up a bit and actually learn how to make the snacks ourselves! Our final endeavor for 2017 was Sup!’s 12 Days of Christmas Cookies. We found a great website called Christmas-Cookies.com that has cookie recipes from all over the world. We picked twelve recipes from this site and made each of the cookies during the 12 days leading up to Christmas. You know how much I love sweets…so this was really fun for me!
One of my favorite snacks we made this year was from Brazil. They are little chocolate and sweetened condensed milk balls rolled in sprinkles called brigadeiros. They are delicious and easy to make! In Brazil, brigadeiros are eaten at special occasions like birthday and weddings, and they are sold at most bakeries and cafes.
Brigadeiros were named after a Brazilian politician and Air Force Brigadier, Eduardo Gomes. Sammy and I had so much fun making the brigadeiros and they were even more fun to taste! The sweetened condensed milk goes really well with the chocolate. I highly recommend watching our video and making them yourself.
My next favorite snack we learned to make are empanadas. These are like a little snack pocket with delicious fillings. Sammy made meat empanadas, but since I am a Vegetarian, and it was Fall, I made dessert empanadas filled with pumpkin. They tasted like mini pumpkin pies! Empanadas were thought to have originated in Spain, but the kind we made are from Argentina. There are many types of Empanadas: meat, seafood, cheese, vegetables, fruit…really you can use any filling you like!
Like I already said, I LOVE sweets. So I can’t end this blog entry without talking about my favorite cookie that we made for Sup!’s 12 Days of Christmas Cookies called Eggnog Kringlas. Eggnog Kringlas are Norway’s sweet pretzel. They are super soft eggnog cookies in the shape of pretzels and they are really fun to make! I liked every step, especially rolling the dough and shaping it into pretzels and dusting them with powdered sugar. In Norway, Eggnog Kringlas are eaten around the holidays, especially in the beginning of December.
I can’t believe how much I have learned this year because of Sup! It is amazing how much you can learn from cooking, like Culture, World History, Geography, Art, Language, Science…I am excited to see what kitchen adventures 2018 will bring! I know we will be posting knife skills tutorials, we have a field trip to learn about Ancient Peru, a show about African cuisine and Sicilian cuisine…and more! Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and Sign up to receive weekly recipes so you can cook and learn along with us!
